Burgschneider Ancestry

For more than 20 years the Burgschneider team is producing historical clothing with a strong focus on the medieval reenactment community. Over the years our scope has broadened into historical products beyond medieval times, branching into designs inspired by movies, theatre and gaming. To distinguish more precisely between historical clothing and costumes not based on historical sources, we decided to separate our products into two different lines. Fashion with historical sources will be released under the Burgschneider Ancestry sub brand and clothing inspired by literature, movies, gaming or modern pop culture will be published as the Burgschneider Legendary line. This is meant to make it easier for our fans, friends and customers to distinguish between historical and fictional designs.

Authenticity of historical clothing by Burgschneider Ancestry

Our priority in designing historical clothing in the Ancestry line is focused on recreating the aesthetics and the look of people of a certain geographical region within a certain period of time and thereby attempting to capture the zeitgeist and mood of that period. By doing this we aim to create the emotional accessibility and immersive experience that helps bring us closer to understanding our ancestors lives. To offer that access to as many people as possible we produce our items utilising modern production techniques and material (wool blends) as well as contemporarily refined material (cotton, linen, wool). Since a historically authentic production would mean authentic growing of raw material as well as often hand crafted items, it would quickly surpass the budget of an average household.

Sources for historical clothing - Ancestry line

In the process of designing and finding inspirations for the historical clothing of the Ancestry line, we use contemporary depictions found in paintings, tapestries and books of the targeted period as well as archeological findings and revelations. We also consult closely with several museums, historians and archeologists to further verify our ideas and designs.
